Animation is, of course, the illusion of movement and life. Traditional animation is done by drawing a series of pencil frames and combining them into a single movie clip. Recent software such as Flash allows the creation of animation digitally.

Character layout is the drawing of key poses when a sequence is intended to go to another animator or overseas studio for final animation.
